Speaker: Paige F. MacGregor, Libertyland Axolotl Rescue (LLAR)
This month, we’re excited to have LLAR Community Outreach & Partnerships Coordinator Paige MacGregor presenting a deep dive into some of the most unusual and least‑understood aspects of axolotl biology. Paige has spent the last several years working hands‑on with rescue axolotls, documenting rare developmental changes, metabolic disorders, and husbandry challenges that most hobbyists never encounter.
Her recent work with LLAR includes documenting real‑world cases of metamorphosis—a phenomenon many aquarists have heard of but few have ever seen—as well as conducting LLAR’s ongoing study of metabolic bone disease in axolotls. Through detailed observations, photographs, and rescue case histories, the rescue has been able to shed light on how these conditions develop, how they affect long‑term health, and what emerging research suggests about axolotl physiology.
Paige will present “Axolotls Beyond the Basics: Metamorphosis, Metabolic Bone Disease, and Emerging Research,” a program that explores the biology behind these rare conditions and what they mean for keepers, breeders, and amphibian enthusiasts.
She’ll also be bringing LIVE AXOLOTLS, including a fully morphed individual and a mid‑morph case (depending on health and progress), offering a rare opportunity to see developmental differences up close. If you’re interested in amphibians, unusual aquarium species, or cutting‑edge husbandry insights, this is a talk you won’t want to miss.

Mohawk Drive is directly off of Rt 114, the Wampanoag Trail in Riverside. Route 114 is a divided road at the entrance to Mohawk Road. If you're coming from the North, you need to go past the Club to the next turnaround (on the left just past the "Welcome to Barrington" Sign). After you turn around, Mohawk Road will be on your right a short distance past the "Anchor Bay Assisted Living" sign. There's a blue and white sign at the entry of Mohawk Road for the Riverside Sportsman’s Association. The building is at the end of the very bumpy road—low riders take care!
