Please join us, this Wednesday evening, June 18, 2025, at 7:00 for this month's Tropical Fish Society of Rhode Island meeting.
Our speaker this month is Greg Gregory. His talk is "Keeping and Breeding Wild Bettas"
"In this talk we dive into some of the evolutionary tree of the genus Betta that spans over 70 distinct species across Southeast Asia. The specific clades I focus on are: Albimarginata, Splendens, Rubra, Coccina, and Unimaculata.
I am currently the President of the Pioneer Valley Aquarium Society and have been in the hobby for 19 years -well it has been my whole life but I only started counting when I started setting up more tanks outside of the family fish tank. In the time before finishing my bachelors I volunteered at the aquarium under Scott Dowd and worked at many fish stores including Tropic Isle, Crystal Clear Aquatics, and Critter Hut (Now Aqua A's). Currently, I am wrapping up my PhD in Plant Molecular Genetics and lecturing at UMass Amherst. I currently have ~100 aquariums plus some tubs with the major focus on blackwater fish (especially wild Bettas)."
Greg will also be bringing some wild Bettas that he has spawned and raised for auction after the meeting.
As usual we will be taking our speaker to dinner at Gregg's Restaurant at 5:15 before the meeting. The address is 1940 Pawtucket Ave East Providence, RI 02914. Please let me know if you want to join us so I can reserve a large enough table.
We also have our usual meeting activities. You may bring any fish or plants you are submitting for the BAP or HAP for auction. You may also bring up to 3 lots for a Buck-a-Bag auction. We plan to have refreshments, a raffle and a short business meeting.
We will also have our annual elections at the meeting. We can still take nominations from the floor before we open the voting.
The address of our Wednesday meeting is 19 Mohawk Drive, Riverside, Rhode Island. Mohawk Drive is directly off of Rt 114, the Wampanoag Trail in Riverside. Route 114 is a divided road at the entrance to Mohawk Road. If you are coming from the North you need to go past it to the next turnaround, which is on the left just past the "Welcome to Barrington" Sign. After you turn around, Mohawk Road will be on your right a short distance past the "Anchor Bay Assisted Living" sign. There is a Blue and White sign at the entry of Mohawk Road for the Riverside Sportsmans Association. The building is at the end of the road.
